Post Image
Samsung Galaxy Ring is expected to be introduced soon. It could be announced at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26 in Seoul. Samsung is also scheduled to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the Galaxy Tab S9 and the Galaxy Watch 6 series on the day. The rumoured smart ring wearable is said to be marketed as a health tracker. A new report suggests that the South Korean tech giant recently trademarked a series of names for the rumoured device. According to a Dutch publication GalaxyClub, Samsung has trademarked the names Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse and Galaxy Rhythm for its rumoured new health-tracking smart ring wearable. The report adds that the company had previously trademarked the names Galaxy Index, Galaxy Insight and Galaxy Circle for the same purported device. The company had previously been reported to have filed for a trademark for the name Samsung Galaxy Ring with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The filing suggested that the device would be used for tracking, measuring, monitoring, and uploading health, fitness, and sleep-related data. The new trademark filing also reportedly suggests that the smart ring will manage and assess "biometric and physiological data, vital signs and personal health records," to deliver medical advice if and when required. If launched, Samsung could be looking to replace its health-tracking watches with these smart rings. An earlier leak showed the design renders of the Samsung Galaxy Ring. The device seemed to be packed with multiple sensors on the inside while the outer side of the ring seemed to provide a smooth, metallic finish. The multiple sensors surrounding the finger from all sides are expected to offer more accurate observations than other health-tracking devices. The leak added that the Galaxy Ring is expected to include electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors.

Meta Set to Contest EU Antitrust Charges at Friday Hearing to Avoid Hefty Fine
Post Image
Facebook owner Meta will contest EU antitrust charges at a closed hearing on Friday in a bid to stave off a possible hefty fine after regulators charged it with tying its classified advertisements service to its social network, people familiar with the matter said. The European Commission sent a charge sheet to the world's most popular social network last December, singling out two practices that showed that Meta abused its market power. It said Meta's tying of its online classified ads service Facebook Marketplace with its social network Facebook gave the former an unfair advantage. It also took issue with Meta's unfair trading conditions imposed on rival online classified ads services which advertise on Facebook or Instagram. Meta declined to comment on the hearing during which senior Commission antitrust officials and their peers from national watchdogs will be present to hear its arguments. "The claims made by the European Commission are without foundation. We will continue to work with regulatory authorities to demonstrate that our product innovation is pro-consumer and pro-competitive," Meta's lawyer, Tim Lamb, said in a statement. The company could face a fine up to 10 percent of its global turnover and an order to change its business practices if found guilty of breaching EU antitrust rules. It had previously sought to settle the case, people familiar with the matter had told Reuters. © Thomson Reuters 2023

NASA to Unveil New Webb Image on Telescope's First Anniversary
Post Image
NASA is set Wednesday to unveil a new image from the James Webb Space Telescope a year after it first stunned the world with breathtaking views of the distant cosmos. Webb, the most powerful observatory in orbit, was launched in December 2021 from French Guiana, on a million mile (1.6 million kilometre) voyage to a region called the second Lagrange point. Its first full colour picture was revealed by President Joe Biden on July 11, 2022: the clearest view yet of the early universe, going back 13 billion years. The next wave included "mountains" and "valleys" of a star-forming region, dubbed the Cosmic Cliffs, in a region of space called the Carina Nebula; and a grouping of five galaxies bound in a celestial dance, called Stephan's Quintet. NASA has remained coy about the nature of Wednesday's release, which will be made available on its website at 6:00am Eastern Time (3:30pm IST). Webb boasts a primary mirror measuring more than 21 feet (6.5 meters) that is made up of 18 hexagonal, gold-coated segments, as well as a five-layer sunshield the size of a tennis court. Unlike its predecessor Hubble, it operates primarily in the infrared spectrum, allowing it to look back nearer towards the start of time, and to better penetrate dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are being formed today. Key discoveries include some of the earliest galaxies formed a few hundred million years after the Big Bang, finding carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system, and, in our own neck of the woods, stunning new views of the planet Jupiter. Webb has enough fuel for a 20-year-long mission, promising a new era of astronomy. It will soon be joined in its orbit by Europe's Euclid space telescope, which launched on July 1 on a mission to shed light on two of the universe's greatest mysteries: dark energy and dark matter.

Elon Musk Launches AI Startup xAI With Team of Former Google, OpenAI Engineers
Post Image
Billionaire Elon Musk's xAI on Wednesday announced the formation of the artificial intelligence (AI) startup with the launch of its website, unveiling a team made up of engineers who have worked at companies from Alphabet-owned Google to Microsoft and OpenAI. The startup will be led by Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter, who has said on several occasions that the development of AI should be paused and that the sector needs regulation. "Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality," Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday. The website said xAI will hold a Twitter Spaces event on July 14. Musk in March registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing.  The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as a secretary. The website has also listed an application form for interested candidates who want to be a part of the startup. The current team at xAI claims to have worked at multiple organisations, including "DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto".  Back in April, Musk said he is seeking to build a "truth-seeking AI" that shuns political correctness, as a rival to Microsoft's OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. However, he has also expressed concerns regarding the negative impacts of AI, calling it "the potential of civilizational destruction." Meanwhile, Musk has also merged Twitter with a newly created "X" shell company, keeping the brand name for the platform.
