Canada to Stop Spending on Facebook and Instagram Ads
Post Image
The Canadian government will stop spending some CAD 10 million (nearly Rs. 62 crore) per year on Facebook and Instagram ads amid a dispute over a new law on paying online news publishers that the Meta-owned platforms have opposed, Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said on Wednesday. The government still sees a path forward in resolving the quarrel that has led to Meta and Alphabet's Google to say they would end news access on their platforms in Canada, Rodriguez told reporters in Ottawa. Google and Meta announced their moves after Bill C-18, or the Online News Act, was passed into law last month. The government is in the process of finalizing rules that would require the platforms to share some advertising revenue before the law is implemented by the end of this year. "We cannot continue paying advertising dollars to Meta while they refuse to pay their fair share to Canadian news organizations," Rodriguez said. The legislation was drafted after calls from Canada's media industry for tighter regulation of internet giants to allow news businesses to recoup financial losses suffered in the years that Facebook and Google gained a greater share of the online advertising market. "We believe we have a path forward and we're willing to continue talking with the platforms," Rodriguez, who introduced the legislation last year, said. Meta had no immediate comment. It has previously said that news does not hold economic value for the company and news organizations benefit from sharing their reports on Facebook. Canadian telecoms operator Quebecor and Cogeco, which runs radio stations in Quebec, also said on Wednesday they would stop advertising on Facebook and Instagram because of Meta's opposition to the new law. © Thomson Reuters 2023

UK Could Soon Legalise Freezing, Seizure of Crypto Assets Linked to Criminal Activities: Report
Post Image
Marking another clarification to its set of crypto-related legal provisions, the UK Lords have reportedly passed the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill. This gives UK's law enforcement agencies the authority to freeze and confiscate crypto assets linked to busted crimes. Under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the UK has been pacing briskly towards making the nation lucrative for the Web3 ecosystem to thrive in. The decision comes days after the UK officially recognised cryptocurrencies as a regulated financial sector under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2023. Despite its volatile nature, cryptocurrencies have managed to onboard millions of community members from around the world. Crypto-related employment in 2022 hit the mark of 82,200, representing a spike of about 351 percent from 2019's figure of 18,200, data by Block Research had claimed last year. This massive requirement for employees in the sector is too big an opportunity to oversee for the UK. In order to foster a safe crypto ecosystem, the UK government wants to ensure that legal repercussions for crypto criminals are clear along with adding clarity in the roles of the law enforcement authorities. According to a CoinDesk report, the UK government has designed a three-year economic crime agenda, under which, combating criminal abuse of crypto is among top priorities. Units of crypto tactical advisors have been established across the UK to assist police departments identify and seize digital assets linked to crime. For this bill, the approval by the Lords means that it is ready to be extended to the House of Commons next. The approval from both of UK's Houses will make the bill eligible to be signed into a law with the signature of King Charles attesting it. It could be a while before this bill is passed in the UK. In the meantime, UK is working to put a protection plan for victims of Authorised Push Payment scams, which would safeguard investors against financial risks. British consumers buying cryptoassets have also been granted a 24-hour ‘cooling-off' period for the first time from October under tougher marketing rules unveiled by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in June this year. The UK's FCA had earlier said that estimated crypto ownership has more than doubled from 2021 to 2022, with 10 percent of 2,000 people surveyed in the country stating they own cryptoassets. Protecting these community members is what the UK is aiming at. When the UK legalised crypto activities on July 1, it mandated crypto firms to carry warnings such as: "Don't invest unless you're prepared to lose all the money you invest. This is a high-risk investment and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong."

Daniel Radcliffe Says He’s ‘Definitely Not Seeking’ a Cameo in Max’s Harry Potter TV Series: Report
Post Image
Daniel Radcliffe is stated to be fine with not returning in Max's upcoming TV series adaptation of Harry Potter, even in a cameo role. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the British actor, known for playing ‘The Boy Who Lived' in the eight-film-long franchise, confirmed that he's not actively seeking a role in the show, adding that he's quite “excited to have that torch passed.” Warner Bros. Discovery ordered a decade-long series adaptation of the controversial author J.K. Rowling's books in April, which will feature an entirely new cast. Rowling will executive produce the series, which is rumoured to premiere sometime in 2025 or 2026. “My understanding is that they're trying to very much start fresh and I'm sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Radcliffe said in the interview. “So I'm definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I'm very excited to have that torch passed. But I don't think it needs me to physically pass it.” Radcliffe's comments on cameo appearances do hold some weight, with modern blockbusters oftentimes including past actors for nostalgia purposes or simply to drive older audiences to theatres. The Ezra Miller-led The Flash is a good example of that, with the film using multiversal shenanigans as an excuse to carry out somewhat illogical fan service, instead of telling a coherent story. The Wizarding World on the big screen was originally planned to continue with five films in the Fantastic Beasts series, but development seems to be in a state of limbo after the third one — Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore — possibly due to the latest film's lacklustre reception. As for the planned Harry Potter Max series, each of Rowling's seven novels will be adapted into a single season of television, trying to recapture the same magic as Warner Bros' movies did 25 years ago, albeit tailored for a new generation. The story largely follows the titular 11-year-old orphaned boy, who upon learning that he's a wizard is whisked away on a whimsical journey to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to harness his magical powers and learn the truth behind his biological parents' death. Since his stint in the Harry Potter films, lead Radcliffe has appeared in a bunch of theatre plays and movies in absurd roles — even playing a washed-up zombie in Oscar-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's Swiss Army Man. He will next be seen in the fourth season of TBS' anthology comedy series 'Miracle Workers' as wasteland warrior Sid, navigating a fictional dystopia called Boomtown. Geraldine Viswanathan (Bad Education) co-stars in it as a ruthless warlord, coming to terms with the existential terms of married life and small-town living. The Harry Potter series is allegedly eyeing a release sometime in 2025–26, exclusively on Max.
